The oldest man in Britain was today named as 108-year-old George Cook from Dorking in Surrey. He takes the title from 109-year-old Vinson Gulliver, who died last week.
Mr Gulliver died at the Heathside Retirement Home in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, where he first arrived at the age of 106. The former train driver was still doing a lot of writing and reading in his later years, and was affectionately known by friends as " the oldest train-spotter in the world. "
Every night he drank what he called his " Gulliver's Elixir " - a mixture of whisky, orange and honey.
