Memorials to two of Edward's grandsons, Edward Bulstrode, who was buried at Upper Deal church in Kent in 1718, and his brother, Whitelocke Bulstrode (not to be confused with cousin Bulstrode Whitelocke), who was buried in the Hounslow Priory chapel in Middlesex in 1724, each record that their grandfather was Edward Bulstrode of Soley End, near Astley in Co. Warwick, also of the Inner Temple, London, Esquire, sometime Chief Justice of North Wales. Soley End or Sole End, as it is now known, was a hamlet mentioned in the Doomsday Book, but is now represented only by the ancient Sole End Farm and a large house nearby, called Cow Lees.

According to Wood's " Atheniae Oxienses " , 1632-95, Edward Bulstrode in the time of the grand rebellion, siding with the Presbyterians, and taking the covenant, was, by the endeavours of his nephew Bulstrode Whitelocke, a leading man in the long parliament, and a favourite of Oliver, made one of the justices of North Wales. Bulstrode Whitelocke records that, on 21st January 1646, I attended this committee and procured them to name my uncle Mr. Edward Bulstrode, a reader in the Inner Temple, to be a judge in Wales for which he was a fit and learned person. Edward was so appointed on 15th June 1649, the year of Charles I's execution.

Edward was the author of: " A Golden Chain: or a Miscellany of Divers Sentences of the Sacred Scriptures, and of other Authors, collected and linked together for the Soul's Comfort " , 1657, and of " Reports of divers Resolutions and Judgments " , in three parts, 1657, 1658, 1659. Thomas Fuller's " History of the Worthies of England " , under " Writers on the Law " , records that:

Edward Bulstrode, Esq., (born in this county [Bucks.] bred in the studies of our municipal laws in the Inner Temple and his Highness's justice in North Wales) hath written a book of divers resolutions and judgments, with the reasons and causes thereof given in the Court of the King's Bench in the reign of King James and King Charles, and is lately deceased.
In 1712, Edward was referred to as a very learned Lawyer as appears by his book of Reports, a Work of great esteem to this Day.

Bulstrode Whitelocke, who was born at the home of his great-uncle Sir George Croke in Fleet Street on 6th August 1605, was christened at St. Dunstan's in the West on 19th August. Like his father, he was educated at Merchant Taylor's School and St. John's College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1626 and became Treasurer there in 1628. He was M.P. for Stafford in 1626 and appointed Recorder of Abingdon and Henley. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. M.P. for Great Marlow in the Long Parliament, he played a prominent part on the side of Parliament in the conflict with Charles I, like his uncle Henry Bulstrode and cousin Thomas.

When Bulstrode Whitelocke was at Oxford, the President of his College was William Laud, the future Archbishop of Canterbury, a friend of his father's, who took a great interest in his education. Because of this friendship, in spite of Laud's merciless persecution of the Puritans, Bulstrode refused to take part in his prosecution.

While in college, Bulstrode played an active part in field sports and musical activities and, at Christmas 1628, he was chosen Master of Revels at the Middle Temple. Five years later, when the four Inns of Court joined forces to organise a masque to be performed before the King and Queen, Bulstrode had the whole care and charge of the music for the great masque, which was so performed that it excelled any music that ever before that time had been heard in England. This may possibly have given him a little consolation, for his first wife, Rebecca, daughter of Thomas Bennett, Alderman of London, whom he married in June 1630, had become insane. She died on 9th May 1634. Their eldest son, James, became a colonel in Cromwell's army and was knighted by the Protector at the age of twenty-five. Bulstrode married, secondly, on 9th November 1635, Frances, sister of Francis, Lord Willoughby of Parham. Their eldest son, William, was knighted by William III in 1689.

A soldier, diplomatist, and author, born 1610; died 1711, was the second son of Edward Bulstrode by Margaret, daughter of Richard Ashley, chamberlain of the queen's household and member of the Inner Temple. He was educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and while at the university was the author of a poem on the birth of the Duke of York. At twenty-three years of age he entered the Inner Temple and in 1649, at his father's request and through his interest, was made a bencher. During the Civil War he was loyal to the king, serving in the Prince of Wales's regiment and holding at times the post of adjutant. He was later promoted to the rank of Adjutant-General of Horse, and still later to be Quartermaster-General. He was appointed to take charge of the funeral of Lord Strafford and became responsible for the expenses attending it; on being pressed by his creditors he fled to Bruges. He subsequently underwent a short term of imprisonment, which was terminated by the payment of the debt by Charles II. On his return he was appointed auditor of a Scotch regiment then serving in the Netherlands and in 1673 was appointed agent at the court of Bruges. He was temporarily recalled two years later, and on 1675 was knighted and again sent to Brussels, this time as resident, where he remained until the accession of James II when he was made envoy. When the revolution of 1688 compelled James to leave England, Bulstrode accompanied him to the court of Saint-Germain, where he remained until his death. Among his writings are: " Original Letters written to Earl of Arlinton, with an account of the Author's Life and Family " , " Life of James II " , " Memoirs and Reflections on the Reign and Government of Charles I and Charles II " and a large number of elegies and epigrams.

The Dictionary of National Biography wrongly records Sir Richard's mother, Margaret, as the daughter of Richard Astley, chamberlain of the Queen's household and that Sir Richard was born in 1610. He himself wrote that he was born in the year 1617 - 7 years before James the first dyed. James I died on 27th March 1624. Add. MSS 3885 f129 1689

Unlike his father and most other members of his family (several of whom were also lawyers and some members of Parliament) Richard sympathised with King Charles, joining the Royalist forces at the outbreak of the Civil War, but, in later life wrote:

" I was then very young and in a labyrinth, not knowing well which way to go, but at last I resolved to go to Whitehall [Palace] with some gentlemen of the Inner Temple, being then newly come thither from Cambridge, where I had been bred in Pembroke Hall. I was brought up to London by my father from Coventry, where we then dwelt. "

Richard was later to achieve distinction as a soldier, lawyer, diplomat and historian and to be knighted by Charles II for his services.

Richard took part in the siege of Warwick Castle from 7th to 23rd August 1642, on which he recorded: Our endeavours for taking it were to little purpose for we only had two small pieces of cannon which were brought from Compton House, belonging to the Earl of Northampton, and those were drawn to the top of the church steeple and were discharged at the castle, to which they could do no hurt, but only frightened them within the castle, who shot into the street, and killed several of our men. This was the first Action I was ever in and, being upon an unruly Horse, he ran away with me amongst the Enemy, while we pursued them to the Bridge, in which Hurly I lost my Hat.

Richard, who served in the Prince of Wales Regiment of Horse, wrote: I was engaged in all the wars with King Charles the first and received a terrible wound from a pole axe in my head at Edge Hill which was the first great battle between the King and his rebellious subjects which was fought on 23rd October 1642.

At Present no link has been found to connect Thomas (and Rebecka) and Francis (and Jane Ashmore) to Edward and Margaret Bulstrode the evidence of a connection is purely circumstantial.
The Bedworth Registers clearly show a link between the Bulstrode and Bolstridge surnames. There are no other compulsory records that list a Bulstrode in the area except Sir William Bulstrode who died at Coventry, without issue, in 1646 and in his Will he made bequests to friends and to Edward Bulstrode (of Sole End) son of his kinsman Edward Bulstrode.
In 1774 a freeholder is listed at Bedworth Woodlands in the Warwickshire poll book called Francis Bolstridge.

Thomas and his wife Ann had several children, three of whom, William, Thomas and John David, were baptised at St. Leonard's, Shoreditch, in London, in 1768, 1770 and 1771. Why Thomas went to live in London at that time is a matter of speculation but, after a few years, he and his family returned to Coventry and in 1772, the year in which Thomas was admitted as a Freeman of the City, they were living in the East Street Ward of the City. Two years later, in October 1774, at the time of the Poll to elect an MP for Coventry, Thomas was listed as an " Out-Voter " , living at Stoke, near Coventry. Thomas and Ann's daughters, Sarah and Phoebe, were baptised at Stoke in 1774 and 1777. In 1785, Thomas was recorded as Thomas Boulstridge of Stoke, engine weaver and, in 1796, as Thomas Bouldstridge, formerly of Gosford Street and East Street Wards, Coventry, the Bouldstridge spelling being that which members of the family acquired in London. Thomas's brother William was living in New Buildings, Coventry at the time he was admitted as a Freeman of the City and, in 1774, was living in Gosford Street.

NB ---- I do not question the above information it is well documented at Coventry Archives, however I cannot not see the justification for assuming that this Thomas is the same Thomas, the son of Francis and Eleanor from Bedworth Woodlands as placed by Norman Dudley.
The lack of Bol(d)stridges in the Parish Registers preceding this period has more to do with the state or loss of these registers than their absence. A recent index of the Precept Records records Bo(u)l(d)stridges prior to 1772, I shall check these in due course.

A far more likely candidate is the Thomas Bolstridge who married Hannah King (Arnold) at nearby Astly. This Thomas was wrongly allocated to John and Ann Hewitt by Norman Dudley who had missed the burial of their Thomas.

Another likely Candidate is the Thomas Bolstridge buried at Great Packington in 1781. No age is mentioned but these is a connection to Packington via Francis Bolstridges second wife Mary Daniel.

Francis Bolstridge, who was baptised at Bedworth on 14th May 1775, joined the Warwick Militia in 1803. In 1833, then a sergeant, he was discharged due to severe gout, at the age of " 63 " . According to the Militia records, he was 5ft . 91/2ins. tall, had grey hair, dark eyes, a dark complexion and was of good character! The Militia had been re organised and increased in size in 1798 in the face of possible invasion by the French. Thomas, was apprenticed to Thomas Beaumont, engine weaver, of Coventry on 19th May 1785. He subsequently returned to London, where he had been born, and married Rebecca Roe at St. Buttolph, Bishopsgate, on 25th December 1788. In 1796, as Thomas Bouldstridge of London, weaver, he sought to be admitted as a Freeman of the City of Coventry, but failed to appear before the Court at Coventry to take the oath, on any of the several occasions he was requested to do so, and so was not enrolled.

Charlotte Bolstridge and her four children Caleb, William, Susan and John arrived in New York on the 25 Apr 1850 travelling on the Hampshire from Liverpool. It appears that William her Husband had preceded her. All four Children were Baptised at Bedworth on the 10 Feb 1850 in preparation for the Journey

Both William and Charlottes family were Ribbon Weavers and there was great distress in the trade at that time due to the cheap imports of factory produced ribbons in the 1840's
Pigot and Company's Directory for 1841 recorded that, at Bedworth: Three collieries, opened in the vicinity, are productive of some advantage to the inhabitants, who, previously to the depressed state of the ribbon trade, were chiefly employed in that branch of manufacture.

In August 1861, the Vicar of Bulkington, near Bedworth, recorded in his parish register that some 27 members of six local families were emigrating to Canada in consequence of the continued depression of the ribbon trade and that, at that time, there were 83 vacant houses in the parish. A year or two later, William Josiah Bolstridge (4 x great grandson of Thomas and Rebecca Bulstrode alias Bolstridge), who was born at Bedworth in 1825, and his wife, Martha Jaques, descendant of a once prosperous Huguenot family, who was born at Griff, in the parish of Chilvers Coton, both previously employed as ribbon weavers, as were their two eldest children, left their home in Bulkington Lane, Bedworth, and took their children to start a new life at Aston juxta Birmingham.

In 1861, William Josiah's father, Thomas, then aged 80, and Martha's grandmother, Mary Jaques, aged 77, both formerly ribbon weavers , were inmates of Bedworth Almshouses. Martha's father, Thomas, and grandfather, Thomas Jaques, had both been miners at the Griff colliery. Their ancestor, William Jaques, a yeoman of Chilvers Coton Woodland, was recorded in the 1674 Hearth Tax Returns as having a house with six chargeable hearths Mary, the first wife of Mr. Jaques of Coton Parish was buried in the Churchyard of Astley parish church on 17th February 1682. At that time, he was serving as a bailiff on the estate of the Newdigates of Arbury Hall.

William Josiah and Martha Jaques were married at Chilvers Coton parish church on 2nd September 1844. After their move to Aston, William Josiah (sometimes recorded as William and sometimes as Josiah) found employment as a railway porter and waggoner. Martha died there in 1874 at the age of 46, having borne twelve children, five of whom died in infancy.

William Josiah and Martha's son Samuel, who was born at Bedworth on 29th April 1854, was a young schoolboy when his parents moved to Aston, He married twice, having two children, Samuel and Ann Selina, by his first wife, Selina Turner, who died at the age of 26, and nine children by his second wife, Clara, daughter of William and Emma Cherry and granddaughter of Mark Cherry, a watchmaker, who was born in Buckinghamshire, where the family had lived since the 17th century.
