(The 23rd foot were the Welch Guards, the Grenadiers one of the best marching bands in the world.(Not Welsh) .
Recruitment for the Guards was carried out in London.
The 23rd main barracks was at Chichester until 1871.
There is a connection with Leek but I don't know what. In the early 90's the IRA shot dead a Sergeant from the Welch Fusiliers at Leek railway station he was from a barracks nearby. This barracks had been in the news earlier after being raided by the IRA for arms.)
