In 1881 the Rector of Hoby was also the Rector of Rotherby and the Rectory at Rotherby was leased to Lady Sarah Wilson. Joseph lived in the Gardeners cottage at Hoby Rectory and no doubt his duties included the gardens at Rotherby rectory a short walk across the fields. Maria was a ladies maid at Rotherby Hall and this is no doubt how they met.

In the 1891 census Joseph Parsons was the gardener at The Elms, Leicester Road, Loughborough the home of E.H. Warner the owner of a substantial hosiery business who provided land in Moor Lane to build a new church for this area of Loughborough. Christ Church was consecrated in 1878 and Derrick Hewitt in his book " The Life And Times of Holy Trinity " writes :-

" The role of verger at Holy Trinity for the 122 years of its existence remained for virtually all of the time within the hands of two families. This is indicative of the faithfulness which is so much a feature of Holy Trinity life and service. .................................................
In 1900 the office of Verger passed to the Parsons family with whom it was to remain for well over 50 years. The first member of that family to hold office was Mr J. W. Parsons who lived at 8 Cobden Street before moving to what was to become the family home of 29 School Street in 1906. He was succeeded in 1926, after 27 years service, by his son William Henry Parsons and he was to hold the office until his death in 1951. "
