At enlistment he was said to be 20 years and 5 Months and by trade a Brick Layer's Labourer and said to be born at Austrey??
he was promoted to a Bombadier 29 July 1910 after serving as a Gunner in India, Egypt and the Mediterranean
On the 10th April 1913 he was transferred to the reserve list

After the outbrake of war in 1914, william was mobilized at Woolwich on 5 Aug 1914
After a spell as a gunnery instructer he was posted to France as a Bombadier on 512 Sept 1914
Promoted to Corporal on 21 Sept 1914 and Serjeant on 28 June 1915

William served with distinction, was wounded in action twice 26/9/15 & 1 - 7/16
Awarded the Military Medal

B.204, which will then be forwarded with the mans attestation to the brigade commander, who will arrange for his examination by the deputy director of medical services, or medical inspector of recruits. If the man is found unfit the C.O. will discharge the man without delay, and an extract from the certificate will be attached to the discharge documents. A recruit admitted to hospital prior to completing three months service and found to be of defective intelligence, but not actually insane will also be discharged under ?. A cavalry or R.H.A. recruit who is found not to come up to the education standard required for that branch of the service, or a recruit considered by his C.O. undesirable on account of conduct and thus unlikely to make an efficient soldier may be discharged under ? subject to the approval of the brigade commander."

Location: Corbie is a village 15 kilometers south-west of Albert and approximately 23 kilometers due east of Amiens. La Neuville Communal Cemetery is north of the village.

Historical Information: In April, 1916, No. 21 Casualty Clearing Station came to La Neuville, to remain there throughout the Battles of the Somme, 1916, until March, 1917; and the British Cemetery was opened for it early in July, 1916. Burials from this hospital, and during this period, form the great majority of the British and Dominion burials in either Cemetery, though a few graves were added in each during the fighting on the Somme in 1918. The War Graves in the Communal Cemetery form one long row on the East side of the Cemetery. There are now nearly 200, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site.
