In 1876 Richard Hemming Chapman presented a copy of Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress to a Joseph Parsons
The Flyleaf is inscribed :-
" Joseph Parsons
From
R H Chapman
Xmas 1876
In remembrance of
the days that are past "
The book bears the library stamp of G T Parsons. Was the book passed to George Tonks Parsons by his Grandfather (this Joseph) or by his Uncle Joseph?
Richard Hemming Chapman was born at Upton in 1815 the son of Samuel Chapman and Sarah Hemming so he would be a contemporary of Joseph Snr.In the 1871 Census he was listed as a farmer at Upton but In 1881 he was the House Steward of Sir J Crew at Ticknall DBY.
Samuel Chapman, his father was a tenant Farmer in Upton in 1848 at the time of the Tithe Apportionment. The Barfields occupied Cottages adjacent to the land he farmed and according to the 1851 census Joseph Parsons Snr was a neighbour.
Richard Hemming was married to Julia Buckley Chamberlaine b. Desford in 1834 to Henry and Mary Chamberlaine
It is interesting to note that when Joseph's wife's Parents John Barfield and Mary Chamberlain were married at Packington in 1808 Chase Chapman was a Witness.
Further connections to the Chamberlaines is John Tonks, the Great Grandfather of George Tonks Parsons married Frances Chamberlaine at Peckleton in 1801

In 1881 the Rector of Hoby was also the Rector of Rotherby and the Rectory at Rotherby was leased to Lady Sarah Wilson. Joseph lived in the Gardeners cottage at Hoby Rectory and no doubt his duties included the gardens at Rotherby rectory a short walk across the fields. Maria was a ladies maid at Rotherby Hall and this is no doubt how they met.

In the 1891 census Joseph Parsons was the gardener at The Elms, Leicester Road, Loughborough the home of E.H. Warner the owner of a substantial hosiery business who provided land in Moor Lane to build a new church for this area of Loughborough. Christ Church was consecrated in 1878 and Derrick Hewitt in his book " The Life And Times of Holy Trinity " writes :-
" The role of verger at Holy Trinity for the 122 years of its existence remained for virtually all of the time within the hands of two families. This is indicative of the faithfulness which is so much a feature of Holy Trinity life and service. .................................................
In 1900 the office of Verger passed to the Parsons family with whom it was to remain for well over 50 years. The first member of that family to hold office was Mr J. W. Parsons who lived at 8 Cobden Street before moving to what was to become the family home of 29 School Street in 1906. He was succeeded in 1926, after 27 years service, by his son William Henry Parsons and he was to hold the office until his death in 1951. "

Notes:
From Derrick Hewitt's " The Life and Times of Holy Trinity Church Loughborough " <1997>
" Billy Parsons was a very talented man, being a skilled wood carver, and the many examples of his skill, love and devotion to the church were to be seen amongst the artefacts in Holy Trinity. He was also able to play the organ and was capable of deputising in the absence of the regular organist.
Among the artefacts that were the products of his skills were the Altar rails, given by Miss Odham. which were dedicated on January 25th 1931. (The original altar rails were donated to the new Church of the Good Shepherd when it was consecrated in 1938.)
A carved font cover given by the Girls' Brigade was consecrated on June 9th 1935 (This was given to St Mary's Roman Catholic Church when Holy Trinity was closed in 1995)
A Bishop's Chair, given by Mr Cook in memory of his wife, consecrated by Bishop G. Vernon Smith in July 1946, now resides in All Saints Church.
An earlier Bishop's Chair also caned by Mr Parsons in memory of his own father and consecrated by Bishop Willis in 1927 now resides in the Church of England School in William Street.
The volume and quality of this work indicated the time and commitment that Mr Parsons (Billy) had for Holy Trinity. He also did work for other churches including Emmanuel Loughborough (hymn boards) St Savours Leicester (Eagle Lectern) as well as churches in Wolverhampton.
During his period of office Holy Trinity had some of its most successful days and this imposed a considerable work load on the clergy of the time and upon Mr Parsons. A study of the Easter communicant figures indicated the way in which Holy Trinity thrived in those days.

Away from the church Billy Parsons gave a lifetime of service to the Post Office serving from 1898 --1943 and being awarded the Service Medal. Also on 12th Dec 1913 he featured in the local press by stopping a runaway horse and dray as it galloped from Church Gate into the Market Place.
After his death in 1951 the caretaking and vergering tradition was carried on by his family mainly by his wife and son George. This arrangement continued until 1958 when the tasks became too much for Mrs Parsons..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.The connection of the Parsons family with Holy Trinity and indeed with the United Parish of All Saints with Holy Trinity. has not been lost, being maintained by Miss Nellie Parsons, the daughter of Mr W. H. Parsons. who continues to worship at All Saints with Holy Trinity.

The Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery, which is located 9 kilometres north east of Ieper town centre, on the Tynecotstraat, a road leading from the Zonnebeekseweg (N332). The names of those from United Kingdom units are inscribed on Panels arranged by Regiment under their respective Ranks. The names of those from New Zealand units are inscribed on panels within the New Zealand Memorial Apse located at the centre of the Memorial.
The Tyne Cot Memorial is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence. There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites. The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates those of all Commonwealth nations except New Zealand who died in the Salient, in the case of United Kingdom casualties before 16 August 1917. Those United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war. Other New Zealand casualties are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery. The TYNE COT MEMORIAL now bears the names of almost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Herbert Baker with sculpture by Joseph Armitage and F V Blundstone, was unveiled by Sir Gilbert Dyett in July 1927. The memorial forms the north-eastern boundary of TYNE COT CEMETERY, which was established around a captured German blockhouse or pill-box used as an advanced dressing station. The original battlefield cemetery of 343 graves was greatly enlarged after the Armistice when remains were brought in from the battlefields of Passchendaele and Langemarck, and from a few small burial grounds. It is now the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world in terms of burials. At the suggestion of King George V, who visited the cemetery in 1922, the Cross of Sacrifice was placed on the original large pill-box. There are three other pill-boxes in the cemetery. There are now 11,952 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in Tyne Cot Cemetery. 8,365 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to more than 80 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate 20 casualties whose graves were destroyed by shell fire. The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.
