William enlisted in the Royal Field Artillary at Derby on the 27 July 1905
At enlistment he was said to be 20 years and 5 Months and by trade a Brick Layer's Labourer and said to be born at Austrey??
he was promoted to a Bombadier 29 July 1910 after serving as a Gunner in India, Egypt and the Mediterranean
On the 10th April 1913 he was transferred to the reserve list
After the outbrake of war in 1914, william was mobilized at Woolwich on 5 Aug 1914
After a spell as a gunnery instructer he was posted to France as a Bombadier on 512 Sept 1914
Promoted to Corporal on 21 Sept 1914 and Serjeant on 28 June 1915
William served with distinction, was wounded in action twice 26/9/15 & 1 - 7/16
Awarded the Military Medal
Commissioned on 1st Nov 1917
William was transferred to the reserve list in 1919 where he remained untill 1935
