died 16th March 1911 Lunatic Assylum Hatton, Edward Joseph Norton, age 68 years, gardener of Union Workhouse Atherstone, acute oedema of lungs about 48 hours pon? (dementia) certified by Alfd Miller M.B. informant Alfd Miller Superintendant Lunatic Assylum Hatton, registered 22nd March 1911,P.Coy registrar.

I have been able to find Edward in the 1871 census living at Glass Gardens, his family are there in the 1881 census but he is missing. From Hatton Asylum record c1891 he is probably in Middx Asylum (Banstead) appearing as E.N. He then appears in Hatton Asylum in the 1891 census as J. E. N. His wife having died in 1890 and four nof his children having died in the mid 1880s, he took to the drink. From the 1891 record he had also been in the Canterbury Asylum (probably St Augustines) with his first attack aged 32. He is not recorded as being in Hatton in the 1901 census.
Asylum records give his address as " the Vineries", Grendon.

NOTE. Glasshouse Grardens is the piece of land between Grendon Lodge and the railway line. The maps of c1880 show a couple of houses and large greenhouses there, the site at present is occupied by one bungalow. From"The History of Atherstone" this piece of land was owned by the Govonors of Atherstone Grammer School and had been considered for industrial use from 1890 to 1933 but never built on. ( Was this land left as an Atherstone Charity in the past? )

Edward married Mary Ann Mathews on 14 Jul 1869 in Saint Mary's, Dublin, Ireland. Mary (daughter of John Mathews and Anne Goodwin) was born in 1843 in Atherstone, Warwickshire, England; died on 5 Dec 1890 in Atherstone, Warwickshire, England; was buried on 10 Dec 1890 in Cemetery, Atherstone, Warwickshire, England. As there were no births between1878 and 1882 and Edward appears to be missing from the 1881 census was he working away?
