John worked at Tamworth Colliery, where he had an accident crushing his leg, this turned gangrenous and was treated at Birmingham Hospital. This never healed properly leaving him with a limp and an ulcerated leg which had to be drained twice daily.
1911 census records John and family still living at 2, Alvecote Cottages but as boarders with Frank Gladwin and his family. At this time he is recorded as a roadman for Rural District Council. Presumably his accident occured between 1901 and 1911 and perhaps his house was tied to the coal company.
Later between 1911 and 1915 the family moved to 166 Long St Athersone (Cotton Mill Yard).
Burial record gives occupation as engineering labourer.
Atherstone Parish Council burial records show John having died at High Cross Hospital Rugeley however this is a bad transcription and should read Rugby.

    Notes:

From family recollections: Kates mother died when she was young and she went to live with an aunt who teated her badly. Her aunt broke her wedding finger which was never set leaving her with a crooked finger, this must have been broken after she was married as she was unable to remove her wedding band. She had a sister Sarah who lived at Cambridge. Sarah married a Stubbins and one of her sons married Olive Thompson whose brother John Leonard married Florence Norton.
Kates birthday was always believed to be 1/3/1878, she was always known by family as Kate Rose, however from my research her birth was recorded as Kate Ann on the 31/3/1878. No baptism record has been yet found so she may have been christened Kate Rose. Her birth was registered at Scucoates on 10 May so her birth day may have been moved to the end of March to keep within 6 weeks of the birth as required by law.
Kate also gives her father as Henry Gosling on her marriage certificate this is incorrect but I have no explanation for this.
As these anomalies have led to many blind alleys my research on her sister Sarah has led to finding Kate.
From Shuttington Marriage and Banns records John and Kate were married by Banns which were read on 2nd 9th and 16th September 1900, being described as batchelor and spinster both of this parish, so Kate must have resided in Shuttington prior to this.

From my research; In 1881 Kate was living with her mother and grandmother in the Sculcoates district of Hull, her sister Sarah was living with her aunt Elizabeth and her husband George Weston in Ipswitch. In 1891 Sarah was living with Eleanor Sharlen in Ipswich as a general servant, Kate was then living with her aunt Elizabeth and her new husband William Emmans (George having died) in Felixstow. Kates mother Martha and her grandmother Catherine both having died in the March quarter of 1889 in Sculcoates.
Wedding certificate 10th Oct 1900 gives Kate Rose age 22 spinster.
1901 census recorded as Rose age 23 wife born Hull.
1911 census recorded as Kate age 33 wife born Yorkshire.
